The Differences Between E-bikes and Traditional Road Bikes: Which One is Best For You?

Updated: Dec 14, 2022

Cycling has always been a popular hobby but during lockdown, cycling rates skyrocketed as more people invested in bikes and decided to hit the road. Today, the cycling community is still going strong and the number of bike options available means there is something for everyone - including e-bikes.

Similarly to the growth in electric vehicles, e-bikes have quickly become a sought after investment. So, what are the main differences between e-bikes and traditional road bikes? Read on to find out more.

What’s the difference in design?

At first glance, electric bikes and traditional road bikes look very similar minus a few additional components. They have the same frame, handlebars, wheels, pedals and brakes, however, electric bikes have a few additional parts:

Electric Bike Motor: The motor delivers various modes of power alongside pedalling.

Electric Bike Sensor: The sensors recognise when the rider is pedalling so the motor can provide assistance.

Bike Battery: Electric bikes are battery run which means they need to be recharged which can be done by unclipping the battery and plugging it into the socket.

Electric Bike Display: A small screen will display a range of information about your cycling such as distance travelled, speed and battery level.

How do road bikes and electric bikes work?

The main difference between the two types of bikes is how they are used. Traditional road bikes and pedal-powered which mean the speed and distance you travel depends entirely on how you are pedalling. In contrast, e-bikes use battery power alongside pedal power - these levels can be adjusted. Additionally, some electric bikes have a throttle that propels the bike forwards instead or why not buy a model that features a combination of the two?

When to buy an e-bike or road bike

An electric bike is useful for many different types of cycling as is a road bike. However, the extra power provided by the motor will make rides easier.

You may consider an electric bike for:

Faster commuting: The electric aspect of the back is ideal for faster commutes since you can cover more distance in a shorter time period. Our Orbea Gain M30 E-Bike model, for example, is suited to both wet and dry conditions as well as being lightweight.

Leisurely recreational rides: Sometimes you want to enjoy a bike ride without feeling completely fatigued. An electric bike can provide an extra push so you can hit the road in a more leisurely manner.

You may consider a road bike for:

Commuting: Road bikes can also be used for commuting, although if you’re navigating a lot of hills or difficult terrains make sure you invest in a good model!

Professional cycling: If there is a professional aspect to your cycling then you may want to choose a traditional model from your local bike shop. Since you’ll be doing all of the work, it could be a better option for working on your endurance, speed and overall cycling ability.
