Summer is over, and it's time to pack away the shorts and sunglasses, or is it?

Research has shown that if you spend significant time outdoors (which cyclists and runners do), then you should protect your eyes throughout winter and in some cases even more so.

In summer, glasses protect from the sun's high UV and insect strikes, but what most people don't know is that damaging UV rays are much more dangerous in winter than in summer. In summer, green surroundings reflect only about 6% of light, which can increase a lot during winter, especially on crisp and clear days. For example, on snow, that figure is nearly 95%. Only sunglasses with high-quality lenses provide eyes with effective protection against eye inflammation or more serious conditions. This is because sunlight, which contains high levels of UV energy, can cause damage to the retina. All of this means that money spent on high-quality sunglasses is a wise investment.

Great piece - good for thought there. We often assume we don’t need sun protection in the winter 👍🏻
