One Jacket, Three Sports: Why the Madison Roam Has Become My Favourite

I’ve spent the past year wearing the Madison Roam Lightweight Windproof Packable Jacket on runs, mountain bike rides and gravel rides. It wasn’t a deliberate year-long test. I just kept reaching for it.
That’s usually the best sign that a piece of kit is doing its job.
It keeps the weather out without the clammy feeling
The thing I like most is how comfortable it feels when I’m working hard. I want a jacket that takes the edge off the wind and shrugs off a passing shower, but I don’t want to finish a climb or a run feeling wetter on the inside than I would have been without it.
The Roam has struck that balance really well for me. It’s the layer I pull on when the weather turns, and one I’m happy to keep wearing when the effort picks up.
It works beyond the bike
A lot of cycling clothing is brilliant on the bike and awkward everywhere else. This jacket has earned its place on my runs as well as my rides.
On the MTB, it’s a handy layer for exposed trails and chilly descents. On a gravel ride, it’s easy to carry when the forecast can’t make its mind up. And when I’m running, it gives me the protection I want without feeling like I’ve put on a heavy waterproof.
Having one jacket that I actually enjoy wearing across all three sports makes getting ready much simpler.
The Roam Jacket in its purest form is simple, but it works, and that's what I like
There’s nothing fussy about the Roam, and I mean that as a compliment. It packs away small, does the job it’s meant to do and feels well made. The details feel considered, but they don’t get in the way.
After a year of using it, that simplicity is what I appreciate most. I don’t have to think about whether it’s the right jacket for a particular ride or run. If there’s wind, a chance of a shower or a cold start, it comes with me.
My verdict after a year
I’ve owned plenty of jackets for running and riding. Some offer more protection in a prolonged downpour, and some are made for one very specific job. But for the number of times I’ve worn it, across the different things I do, the Madison Roam might be my favourite multisport jacket ever.
It’s comfortable, packable and refreshingly uncomplicated. Most of all, it’s the jacket I keep choosing to wear. For me, that says more than a list of technical features ever could.
