Distance: 4.74 miles | Elevation Gain: 875 ft | Difficulty: Moderate

Winter trail running hits differently. This January, we’re diving into the hills for a proper cold-weather adventure. On Tuesday, 23rd January, the VeloRunner Club will tackle the iconic Dragon’s Back near Hollinsclough. This short but punchy loop delivers stunning views, rolling ridgelines, and Peak District drama dusted in frost.

Why Choose the Dragon's Back?

This 4.74-mile route climbs 875 ft across Chrome Hill, Parkhouse Hill, and Hollins Hill. You’ll encounter a mix of gravel paths, grassy ascents, and technical descents. It’s rated moderate, but winter conditions add a layer of challenge. Expect frozen ground, slick sections, and that satisfying crunch underfoot.

The Experience of Winter Running

We’ll run at a steady, social pace. There will be plenty of regrouping and time to soak up the scenery. Imagine the cold air, warm breath, and the camaraderie that only comes from shared effort in wild places. The landscape will be stripped back and beautiful—skeletal trees, pale skies, and ridgelines that feel otherworldly in the winter light.

Preparing for the Adventure

We’ll meet near Hollinsclough (details to follow). After our run, there’s the option to warm up with a brew and chat about gear, shoes, and future routes. Trail shoes with decent grip are a must. Layers that balance warmth with breathability will make all the difference.

Tips for a Successful Run

  • Dress Appropriately: Wear layers that keep you warm but allow for breathability.

  • Choose the Right Footwear: Trail shoes with good grip are essential for navigating slick and uneven terrain.

  • Stay Hydrated: Even in cold weather, hydration is key. Bring water or a sports drink.

  • Know Your Limits: Listen to your body. If conditions feel too challenging, it’s okay to adjust your pace or route.
