Why We Think Every E-Mountain Biker Should Have a Pair of Madison DTE Waterproof Bib Trousers

There’s a particular sort of British ride that starts with a little drizzle and ends with water running down your back, mud up to your shoulders and a cold drive home. We’ll still go riding, of course. We’d just rather enjoy it.

That’s why we think the Madison DTE 3-Layer Waterproof Bib Trousers make so much sense for e-mountain biking.

An e-bike doesn’t make you immune to the cold

Motor assistance helps you tackle bigger climbs and fit more riding into the day. It can also mean you arrive at the top having generated less body heat than you would on a regular mountain bike. Then you point the bike downhill, pick up speed and feel the wind through your damp kit.

The DTE bib trousers give you a proper barrier against rain, trail spray and wind. They’re the sort of kit that helps make a wet winter ride feel like a ride you chose to do.

The bib is the clever bit

We’ve all ridden through deep puddles and felt the spray hit the gap between jacket and trousers. Madison’s dungaree-style bib rises higher over your torso, giving your lower back and waist more coverage than standard waterproof trousers.

The shoulder straps also hold everything in place. When the trails are wet and muddy, you don’t want to spend the descent pulling your trousers back up.

Built for riding, not just standing in the rain

Waterproof kit is only useful if you can move comfortably in it. These trousers use four-way stretch fabric, shaped knees and a cut designed for movement on the bike. That matters on an e-MTB, where you’re shifting your weight through corners, standing on the pedals and handling a heavier bike over rough ground.

Madison specifies fully taped seams, a durable water-repellent finish and a 20,000 mm waterproof rating, alongside a 40,000 g/m²/24h breathability rating. They also have a long side zip to make getting in and out easier, plus zipped chest and hip pockets. In black, there are short, regular and long leg lengths, so it’s worth taking time to find the right fit. (madison.cc)

Our verdict

Are they for every short, dry summer spin? Probably not. But if you ride your e-MTB through autumn and winter, head out when the forecast looks doubtful or regularly come home covered in trail spray, we think they’re one of those pieces of kit you’ll be glad you bought.

An e-bike helps you keep riding when the climbs get tough your short on time or just want to get more. The right clothing helps you keep riding when the weather does.
